Take the lead: Why lead generation is important for your business

What are social networking platforms for?

They help us meet new people. They help us stay connected with friends and family, near or far. They help us rediscover old relationships and make us wax nostalgic. They help us grow our network and find work. They help us promote our business.

With the right strategy, social networks also help us gain customers through lead generation. Understanding this makes your presence on social networks more meaningful and more hardworking, creating a bigger purpose of why you’re there.

But this is just one place to start. Lead generation can take place through other channels, too, if you know where to look and what to do.

If you don’t, you’ve come to the right place.

What is lead generation?

Hubspot defines lead generation as “the process of attracting and converting strangers and prospects into someone who has indicated interest in your company's product or service. Some examples of lead generators are job applications, blog posts, coupons, live events, and online content.”

If this is still difficult for you to understand, think back to a time when you answered a phone call from a number you did not know, only to realize it is a telemarketer calling with an offer that they hope you would be interested in. This is lead generation (and there are many non-irritating ways of doing it).

In simpler words, lead generation is about attracting people to your business so they naturally gain interest and eventually become paying customers. In this sense, a lead is a person who shows interest in your business. They are willing to make time to learn more and ask questions so they can make an informed decision.

Take note of the word “naturally.” There are options to buy leads but this may not be entirely ethical (remember the intrusive telemarketer) plus this would be added cost and — since the leads are not organic — there is no guarantee that you will successfully acquire and retain them as customers. It’s like shooting blindly.

Lead generation is part of your inbound marketing strategy.

Why is lead generation important?

Why — you wonder — must you still need to think about lead generation, strategies, inbound marketing, and many other things? Isn’t the plate of a business owner already full?

Engage Bay perfectly encapsulates the answer in one word: money.

You need leads to generate sales. Once acquired, you need to keep getting more leads and keep growing your client base. It’s a never-ending process, and the only way to make sure your business will scale. Because, really, what is the point of doing all this if you want to remain stagnant? Isn’t a bigger business a means to help more people?

Here are other reasons why lead generation is important, according to Engage Bay:

  1. Lead generation is “much more inexpensive compared to buying billboard, TV, and print advertisements. It’s also a much more timely and current means of marketing than those ads are.”
  2. Lead generation allows you to specifically target the customer profiles or personas you have identified for your business. (“You can target your audience based on all sorts of criteria, such as location, pain points, gender, interests, shopping behavior, and more.”)
  3. With lead generation, “Your return on investment or ROI increases, which is valuable for companies from small businesses to Fortune 500s.”
