It’s been over a year since all of us have started working inside our homes. And to be honest, it’s not easy to do tasks in a cramped and crowded area like the kitchen or living room — whether you still live with your parents or have your own family now.

As we’ve been wanting to become productive consistently, we have to tick this off in our checklist: a personalized and functional home office.

Make sure to read this step-by-step guide we prepared for you:

1. Choose the best space

This is the first and most important step since you won’t be able to buy the right furniture and decor if you still haven’t finalized your own workspace. Designate a specific area in your house where you can work formally.

Keep in mind that this should be a dedicated, orderly, and still space that can help improve your focus and productivity. It should also free you from any possible distractions and unwanted noise

2. Make the most out of what you have

If you live in a compact apartment for the time being, find a corner and make it your office space. Then buy a desk that is suitable for the size of your chosen corner and use a curtain to put a boundary that can keep others from disturbing you.

You can also turn your empty closet into a working station by removing its shelves and installing a floating shelf to serve as its desktop. Just make sure to fix electrical points and manage lighting before actually using it. Its doors help create the work-life separation we totally need during these trying times.

Use a curtain to really establish a boundary so other people in your house won’t disturb you.

3. Be sure to have your WFH essentials

Assess the kind of work that you do to have the right equipment in your home office. Use a laptop if you intend to be flexible and work outside your house sometimes, and invest in a computer with high specs if your line of work needs better RAM or storage.

Other people use dual monitors when they need to multitask a lot. Aside from these, a high-speed WiFi connection, wireless earphones or speakers are also needed so you could work more efficiently.

4. Focus on your personal likes rather than trends

Trends are a good guide for you to know your preferences on things. In this context, you have to define your unique work-related needs so you will be able to design an enjoyable, productive, and efficient workspace.

Include pieces like an artwork or a mood board as well to gain inspiration when you feel lost or spaced out. Putting some of your favorite photos can make you less anxious.

5. Invest in a comfortable chair

Your office chair is like your throne, so choose a chair that makes you comfortable and will help improve your posture.

Chairs with a taller backrest could prevent you from slouching, too. So make sure to test the chair first before actually buying it.

6. Think about your wires, too

Phone and laptop chargers, and WiFi routers that you use when you need uninterrupted connection can become a clutter if you just place it anywhere.

To have a neat and safe workspace, create a cable management system under your desk and place them closely to plug sockets.

7. Good lighting is key

Place your desk near a window for you to have a naturally-lit working area which helps to improve your productivity.

Be sure to have a lamp on your desk so you can save yourself from headache and eye strain while working on a project at night.

8. Put some greens to freshen up your space

Don’t underestimate your mom’s plants for they can boost your mood just by looking at them.

Snake plants are ideal to put in your home office since it can improve air quality, reduce stress, and increase productivity. They're also low-maintenance!

9. Add some colors to bring more life to your workspace

Energize your space by painting vibrant colors on your wall.

If you prefer keeping it low-key, you can just add some decor accents with the color that you like. After all, you will be the one to work there.

10. Utilize your wall

A clean desktop is the way to go if you want to improve your focus and concentration. But how will you do this if your other essential WFH items are placed on your desk too? The answer: Your wall!

Keep your table free of clutter by putting some of your office supplies and documents on a grid wall organizer or a floating storage rack.

If you have more budget, you can also opt to contact someone who can create a combination of open shelves and closed cabinets for more efficient storage within your home office.

Are you done taking notes? Then it’s time to start working on your home office project!
